MENAKA THOMAS hails from a family of Indian classical musicians and has been surrounded by traditional, devotional Indian music since she was a young girl. She started formal vocal training in classical Indian music at the tender age of 5 under the tutelage of her mother, Vijaya Visvanathan. the principal of the Sri Krishna Music Academy in Brisbane. She has a passion for sharing the divinity of Indian music, and has performed at many community events and festivals, including Woodford Folk Festival, Queensland Multicultural Festival and the Encounters India Festival.
More recently, she has started to explore the fusion of Indian vocals with other world music elements. She is a founding member of the unique world fusion trio, “Spirit of Bhakti”. She is currently working on her first debut album, which will feature a fusion of devotional Indian music with other world music elements.
